Oral Health In Children- Preventive Techniques

Taking care of a child's oral health is important from birth through infancy, adolescence, and adulthood. However, many children develop tooth decay and cavities during their infancy, which can lead to serious oral health concerns as they grow up. In order to prevent the onset of dental problems and ensure that your child's teeth are healthy, preventive dental care is the key. At Harbor Dental, we always stress the importance of preventive dental care in children as it is easier and more affordable to prevent oral disease than to treat it later.

  • Teach your children about dental care

When your child is old enough to understand things, teach them the importance of dental care and good oral hygiene practices. Parents should lead by example by practicing good oral hygiene habits in front of their children. Parents should also take their children to a pediatric dentist early in their childhood to establish good dental habits.

  • Brush your child's teeth regularly.

Brush your child's teeth twice a day in small circles and use a soft-bristled toothbrush.

  • Floss your child's teeth

Children should floss their teeth at least once a day. Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between the teeth, where the toothbrush can't reach. Plaque that is not removed can harden into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional. Flossing can help prevent cavities because it removes plaque from the areas where the toothbrush can't reach.

  • Dental checkups

We recommend that your child visit the dentist twice a year for routine cleaning. During this visit, one of our dental hygienists will remove plaque buildup from your child's teeth, as well as polish them to remove any stains. Afterward, we will make sure that your child is brushing and flossing properly, which can help fend off cavities and gum disease.

  • Dental sealants

Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant acts as a barrier between the tooth and food, plaque, and acid. The sealant can typically be applied after a child's permanent molars erupt, though it can be applied to primary molars as well.

  • Fluoride treatments for children

Your child's teeth will begin to grow soon after birth and will begin to erupt between 6 months and two years of age. It is important to take care of your child's teeth early, even before the teeth erupt. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Talk to your dentist if fluoride is something you want.

  • Diet and dental health for children

Your child's diet can have a big impact on their dental health. Limit foods high in sugar and starch that stick to teeth. These foods can cause tooth decay and cavities.

At Harbor Dental, we ensure that your child receives the best pediatric dental care in a relaxed and calm dental environment.
